In an effort to increase the news literacy of younger generations in the Toronto-Estonian community, Eesti Elu has launched an exciting new initiative. On Sunday, November 12th, we hosted our first journalism workshop at the Hamilton Eesti Kool. Through a series of short lessons, class discussions, engaging activities, and final projects, students will gain an understanding of the fundamental skills required to be a successful journalist in a contemporary context.
In Sunday's brief introductory class, students were familiarized with the basic principles of journalism. This included the term’s meaning, how to identify a newsworthy story, and journalism’s value in contemporary society. Students were engaged in discussions on what they think of the news and their favourite topics to read about.
The remaining four classes (to be continued in the new year) will cover a variety of topics, including research skills and news values, effective interviewing, story structure and writing styles, plus the value of social media in journalism.
At the end of the workshop, students will have completed a short article on a topic of their choice, as well as a social media post to promote it. Keep an eye out for these exciting projects on our website by subscribing.
