Korp! Frat. Estica 2012

The Estonian academic fraternity Korpratsioon Fraternitas Estica celebrated its 105th anniversary in 2012. The first such fraternity to gain recognition in the homeland under czarist rule, Fraternitas Estica managed to survive in spite of being declared illegal under two Soviet and one Nazi occupation. Post-war, it established chapters in many cities world wide, where exile Estonians fled to start a new life. In 1989, it regained official recognition from the Estonian SSR authorities.

Some years later its historic house in Tartu, which had been confiscated in 1940 by the Communists, was returned. After extensive and expensive repairs and renovations, the building serves as home and activity-filled centre for a rapidly expanding group of fraternity brothers who study at the University of Tartu and elsewhere in Estonia. Fraternitas Estica's Toronto chapter also held its own multi-event celebrations with the participation of some three dozen brothers from Estonia. The above photo are members and guests at a reception held at the Boulevard Club in June of 2012. In the front row starting with the fifth from the right are Dr. Arno Elmik, Dr. Hans Sepp and Paavo Loosberg, elected as members emeritus, whose compounded membership years probably add up to more than 200.
