The first step in learning to speak, read, and write the Estonian language is to learn the official alphabet.
In episode one of YouTuber Little Miss Squirrel's (Liisa Orav) series Let's Learn Estonian, get to know all 27 letters and their sounds. Some will be more familiar than others.
Once you know how to pronounce each letter, try reading out loud some common Estonian words based on what you know. Sometimes words will use the sounds of combined letters (called “diphthongs”). However, Estonian is usually made easier because it is a very phonetic language—that is, each letter sound usually stays the same all of the time.
