NAX 5 – Celebrating five years of the Nordic Artist Exchange

On Friday April 12th, four Hamilton artists were present for the opening of their art exhibition called NAX 5. At a large, beautiful gallery space at The Cotton Factory in Hamilton, all artists shared their visual responses of visiting Estonia for a month as a participant of The Nordic Art Exchange.

This special opportunity has been provided by Robert Zeidler, Managing Partner of The Cotton Factory and continues to provide an interesting exchange of creative thoughts about what Estonia has meant to Canadian artists visiting for the first time. Artists Tor Lukasik Foss, Ty Tekatch, Vanessa Crosbie Ramsay and Andrew McPhail greeted guests at the opening and shared their visual ideas about time in Estonia.

All artists stated that their experience in Estonia enriched their perspective of both their outside and internal worlds.

Tor Lukasik Foss uses a dozen icon designs to incorporate into various methods of media exploration including drawings, wooden assemblage, digital design, and collage. Filmmaker Ty Tekatch provides a “sensory” theme in his exploration of the everyday. His film Otolinth is layered with dreamy visions and patterned filters of the natural world of animals, forests and farms. Vanessa Crosbie Ramsay’s colourful mixed-media sculpture installation Relative Safety features a macrame and weaving technique she coins macraweave. Andrew McPhail’s unique sculptural paper installation with Kleenex covered windows and floor pylons is called Two Views, Tallinn/Hamilton.

All artists stated that their experience in Estonia enriched their perspective of both their outside and internal worlds. The exhibition continues until Sunday May 5th, 2024. Another gathering on Sunday April 28th at the space, 5-9pm, will include artist Lisa Pijuan-Nomura.

All free admission.
