Maie Currie announces the publication and availability of her first book, "Shattered Lives." It's a 220-page book in English and it's a story of a young Estonian girl and her family during the Second World War. Millions of lives and a dozen or so countries have been destroyed by Stalin of Communist Russia and Hitler of Nazi Germany. There can never be enough books written about this era, but the difference in the books is how they are written. In my book, I relied on my own vague memories, my mother's stories, my father's journal written while he was fighting on the Eastern front in Latvia, a close family friend's journal, which he kept while he was in a labor camp in Siberia, and other relatives and friends on my eight visits to Estonia.
My story is very personal, endearing, and emotional. The most shocking was when I visited Estonia for the first time to meet my father in 1968 behind the Iron Curtain. The book is exciting and informative and well worth your reading it, not only for my age and older people but the younger generation in order for them to possibly get another prospective on their own family's life.
The reasons for my writing this book was that the more I learned about my life and family, the more and more intrigued I became with it and I wanted to leave something in print for my children, grandchildren, and future generations. Most people already know what Hitler did to the Jewish people, but not too many Americans know how the Baltic people suffered with their own holocaust as a result of Stalin's egomania.
Right now my book is available for $15 plus $3 if shipped by contacting me via e-mail maie.currie1@verizon.net, at the Lakewood Estonian House on Tulu Õhtu celebration on November 5, 2016, where I will be presenting my book and signing it for those who want me to do that. I should be available almost every Friday night at the Lakewood Estonian House. I hope it will also be available at the “Vaba Eesti Sõna” book store soon.
