“I am the first immigrant minister of Citizenship and Immigration in Ontario,” said Koto.
Koto grew up in Flemington Park, one of several children, the only one that had the opportunity to go to university.
Koto pointed out that there is a 45 % increase in immigration is n Toronto. He also pointed out that 30 % of Toronto's workforce is immigrant.
Although Koto is from Grenada (Caria Cou) he points out that he is not the first non-white politician in Toronto. The first one was William Hubbard, one hundred years ago. He drove a hansom cab in Toronto when he helped out the cab driven by George Brown, at that time the publisher of the Globe and Mail. Brown made him an assistant and then had him run as a councillor in Parkdale.
Koto (like the Honourable Eric Hoskins when he was minister of Citizenship and Immigration) wants to give the Commissioner of Fairness some teeth. It means that a person coming from abroad with a profession doesn't work at menial job, but one he trained for.
Koto, who is 40 years old got into politics ten years ago as a school board trustee and then a provincial member.
