PHOTOS – Pan Am Basketball

On Wednesday evening July 22, men's basketball preliminary rounds continued with Canada facing Argentina. The setting was the Ryerson Athletic Centre, formerly the iconic Maple Leaf Gardens. The ceiling remains from the hockey arena. The stands were almost full, mainly with Canadian fans, who clearly propelled their team to a close-fought victory, 88-83. A great deal of fan interest was on NBA star Anthony Bennett (number 10) as well as Toronto phenom Sim Bhullar (number 15). Sim is the first Indian-heritage NBA calibre basketball player who checks in at a towering 2.26 meters (or 7 feet 5 inches). In contrast, the shortest player on the court was Argentine point guard Facundo Campazzo (number7), who is 2 inches short of 6 feet (1.79 meters).

For those interested in the photographic aspects, an F2.8 70-200mm zoom was used throughout. It also seemed to be the preferred lens for the professionals who were present. Basketball's rapid up and down the court action made a zoom versatile. Despite the strong fluorescent lighting, ISO still had to exceed 1000. Shutter speeds were typically 1/1000 seconds. Despite being right under the basket, I found those photos to be challenging with the 200mm setting. On the contrary, using the same 200mm for action at the far end gave some sharply focused results. The photography area was right beside the media zone, which allowed for some photos of Sim Bhullar beside relatively normal height people.
