For those interested in the photographic aspects, I returned to my own F2.8 70-200mm lens, with the intention of trying to capture the spectacular leaps. To maximize the light coming into the camera, the aperture was kept at 2.8, ISO 2000. In order to capture the movement without blur, shutter speeds ranged from 1/2000 second to 1/3200 seconds. The wide open aperture created a very shallow depth of field, so not all parts of the gymnast were perfectly in focus. For those who notice a tilt in the background, as opposed to a level horizon, that comes from sharing a bench with at least 8 other photographers. When the gymnast moves from side to side, the camera has to follow without always being able to maintain a level horizon. Most of the photos of the leaps were captured at 150 mm of lens, essentially double the width of the fixed 300 mm lens used for yesterday's photo gallery.
