PHOTOS – Pan Am Tennis

The Pan Am Games tennis activity started on Saturday July 11 at the Canadian Tennis Centre (Rexall Centre) at York University. Sparse crowds made for easy photographic access to regular seating areas. In addition, there were no other accredited photographers at the afternoon sessions, so I had the whole court-side photo area to myself. The women's singles match featured Canada's Gaby Dabrowski beating Brazilian Gabriela Ce. The tables were reversed for the men's doubles, where Canadians Bester and Schnur lost to Chile's Jarry and Podlipnik.
For those interested in the photographic aspects, the strong sunshine made it easy to shoot at ISO 100. Shutter speed was typically 1/1000 sec, which still was not enough to make the writing on the tennis ball legible. I experimented with mid-zoom (around 200mm, which created the best opportunities). For close-ups at 400mm of zoom, there is always the risk of cropping part of the photo, but the payoff may come with interesting facial expressions. The first part of the women's singles was shot from the first row of spectator seats. Then I moved court-side. For the men's doubles, most of my focus was on play at the net.
