Hockey cards
Hockey cards were a quick and easy way to make friends, almost instantly. Many boys in Toronto schools were enthusiastic collectors of hockey cards, especially between the ages of eight to twelve or so. Playing with hockey cards was a natural progression from playing with Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars. We could buy a pack of eight cards, enclosed with a stick of gum for about ten cents at any convenience store nearby. These stores were often part of a chain store, like Beckers Milk or Mac’s Milk. The excitement was in the hope of getting some special card, like your favourite player, or the team photos, or some other unique release for that year.
