Estonian Life No. 21 2016
Over the past ten years, the European Union Embassies' Open House Day has become a cultural highlight in Washington, DC, attracting tens of thousands of would-be-diplomats from near and far, eager to step inside the mysterious buildings where diplomats from the 28 EU countries make history. As for the throngs who waited patiently in line to enter the Estonian Embassy, Pillerkaar gave all a foretaste of the grace and fun of the culture that awaited inside. With just a few feet separating the dancers from the audience, it was impossible for those watching not to get carried away by the joyous melodies and dancers' infectious smiles. So dozens of diplomats-for-a-day became dancers-for-a-day as they joined Pillerkaar in twirling and waltzing outside the embassy. Hundreds more onlookers of all ages and nationalities, impressed by the beauty of the dancers' national dress, posed for pictures with the dancers. And Pillerkaar danced for hours, sacrificing heels to the brick slope, stopping only when the winds of the oncoming storm forced them to halt because ...
Elu rõõmuta ei püsi.
Häälege keeled, hõisake meeled,
tantsude viisid te veerege!
(Estonian old saying)
(Life without joy does not persevere.
Let voices sound, let spirits lift,
Dance melodies let roll!)
