“Even though the candidate we worked for won the election, we have evidence that there were voting issues and irregularities in the last election that need to be addressed”, said Bissoondial.
Bissoondial noted that several people were being added to the voters' list in Scarborough-Rouge River without being asked to prove their Canadian citizenship. “Moreover, using a bank statement or any piece of mail as sufficient proof of address ought to be considered inadequate,” added Bissoondial.
Voter irregularities were at the heart of Wrzesnewskyj vs. Opitz, where former Member of Parliament (and recipient of the Estonian Central Council Medal of Merit for activities promoting Eastern European freedom) Borys Wrzesnewskij contested the results of the Etobicoke Centre election, where registration certificates were filled out incorrectly.
The Supreme Court dismissed Wrzesnewskyj's case saying that in the course of a long 14 hour day such as election day, administration errors are to be expected and even accepted.
“Its important that Canadians have trust in their electoral system,” said Angolano.
