Viiu Kanep was a member of the intercollegiate archery team from 1959 to 1962 and volleyball team from 1958 to 1961, earning her Silver T Award in 1961. She was the inaugural winner (1962) of the Dr. Clara Benson Honour Award, given to the female student-athlete in her graduating year for outstanding ability in athletics and scholarship. Viiu helped organize the opening of the Clara Benson Building (the University's first athletic facility for women), and did not stop giving back after graduation. She served as the Women's T-Holders' president from 1986 to 1989 and active volunteer for many years. She also served on the Council of Athletics and Recreation for more than 15 years and on the University Affairs Board in the 1990s.

University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame rajati 1987.a., et austada ülikooli suurepäraseid sportlasi, võistkondi ja spordile pühendunuid ning et pühitseda sportlikke saavutusi. Sports Hall of Fame'i administreerib ülikooli kinesioloogia ja kehalise kasvatuse teaduskond koos T-Holders' Association'ga. Igal aastal toimub induktsioonitseremoonia.
Tänavuste austatute hulgas on ka eestlanna Viiu Kanep, kelle kohta ilmus Sports Hall of Fame'i aastaraamatus järgnev kirjutis koos fotoga.
