New book — Eha’s Great Escape: Estonia 1944

Eha's Great Escape (Eha suur põgenemine): Estonia (Eesti) 1944 by Kaili (Lupp) Colford.

In 2024, we commemorate the 80th anniversary of one of the most dramatic and dangerous escapes in modern history – the 1944 flight of thousands of Estonians during World War II. This book captures that pivotal moment through the personal story of my grandmother, Eha.

Told as if through her own diary, Eha's Great Escape (Eha suur põgenemine) recounts the harrowing journey of a 17-year-old girl fleeing Soviet occupation. In gripping first-person entries, Eha’s story reflects the fear, courage, and resilience she and countless others needed to survive as they crossed the perilous Baltic Sea to reach Sweden. Accompanied by evocative illustrations inspired by Eha's own photographs – moments from her life, loved ones, and her family farm.

Eha's Great Escape shows why remembering history is essential, as it continues to shape our lives and global events.

Written in both English and Estonian, this book is an accessible way for children and youth to engage with a crucial part of European history. But Eha’s story isn’t just about the past – it’s a vital reminder of how understanding history helps us make sense of the present. The courage to seek freedom, the struggles of displacement, and the resilience of refugees resonate deeply in today's world. Eha's Great Escape shows why remembering history is essential, as it continues to shape our lives and global events.

Perfect for young readers and families, this book offers a deeply personal connection to history, inspiring reflection on resilience, survival, and the lessons we must carry forward.
