PHOTOS – Beach volleyball Sunday, men’s matches

Sunday September 18 featured the men's beach volleyball semifinals, bronze and gold medal matches. The American team of Hyden and Bourne lost to Brazilians Solberg and Goncalves in the first semifinal. Canadians Schalk and Saxton also lost to the second Brazilian team, Cerutti and Schmidt. This set up an all-Brazilian gold medal match, much to the delight of the Brazilian fans. The bronze medal was contested by the North Americans. Despite a full house of loud and enthusiastic Canadian fans, the Americans prevailed to win the bronze medal. The gold medal match established the dominance of the Rio Olympic champions, Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt who beat their countrymen in two sets. As a footnote to those interested in names, several beach volleyball players are such celebrities in the sport that their first name only is on their clothing. Powerful serving Evandro Concalves and word champion Alison Cerutti are examples from these matches.
