Gallery: The 34th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence

Thousands of Ukrainian-Canadians and their supporters celebrated the 34th anniversary of Ukrainian independence a day early on Saturday, August 23rd at Centennial Park in Etobicoke.

Dozens of organizations and merchants  interacted with guests throughout the day with various Ukrainian food vendors adding wonderful aromas to the atmosphere. The  VIP reception featured a visit from Ontario Premier Doug Ford as well as the presence of diplomats, politicians, and members of the Ukrainian community, led by the event organizer, the Toronto branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.

A procession to the main stage marked the start of the official ceremonies. After an emotional and rousing singing of the national anthem, folk dancers performed an energetic and colourful opening act. A speech by the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania, Egidijus Meilūnas, noted Black Ribbon Day and emphasized that the Baltic states and all of Europe are deeply concerned about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Toronto mayor Olivia Chow vowed to continue the city’s commitment to fly the Ukrainian flag until the war is won. Federal politicians led by MP Yvan Baker outlined Canada’s support of Ukraine. MPP Sheref Sabawy and provincial colleagues acknowledged the organizers of the event.

In addition, a variety of local singers and musicians serenaded the audience and even more folk dance groups displayed their artistry and athleticism to the appreciative audience.
