PHOTOS – Pan Am Handball

On Thursday July 16, women's handball began at Exhibition Centre with a match between Brazil and Puerto Rico. Handball is a mix between soccer and basketball, played with seven players to a side, and with two 30-minute halves. Dribbling, passing and throwing are the main actions. The game is very fast-paced, with no time for celebrations after a goal lest one's opponent scores while you are celebrating. It is played extensively in Europe and Latin America. In men's play, Iceland is a world powerhouse in the sport.

Photographing this activity was a challenge. The lighting was not as good as one might have expected. In addition, the technical director of the sport did not want to allow photographers in the first place, but relented and allowed photographers only in the corners and only seated on the ground or behind the netting (but also on the ground). Furthermore, when trying to get a clear view of the goal area in one's end, one of the two referees and/or the attacking team's right-winger were often positioned right in the corner.

For those interested in the photographic aspects, I cranked the ISO to 4000, thus resulting in the granularity of the photos. Shutter speed was 1/2000 second. Shooting almost exclusively at F2.8 with a 200mm lens.
