Baltic Psaltery Meetup: Performances and Workshops by Honeypaw and Laura Legzdins

Curious as to what a baltic psaltery is and interested in giving it a try? Do you have a psaltery picking up dust? Unsure how to tune, or get started playing?

KENA (Kanada Eesti Noorte Assotsiatsioon/Canadian Estonian Youth Association) and VEMU Estonian Museum Canada invite you to join us at 6.30 pm on May 6th at Tartu College for an introduction to the Baltic psaltery through performances and beginner-friendly workshops.

The baltic psaltery is one of the oldest instruments to the fenno-ugric and baltic peoples, bearing many names: kantele by the Finns, kannel by the Estonians, kokles by the Latvians, kanklės by the Lithuanians, and gusli in northwest Russia.

The evening will begin with instrument tune-ups, supported by the luthier Matti Palonen. Honeypaw (FIN/LTU) and Laura Legzdins (LAT) will perform and provide an overview of their respective psaltery traditions. Following performances, we will have introductory workshops where participants can learn simple techniques to the tunes of old folk songs. The workshop will be in English and is welcome to all ages and musical backgrounds.

Please register for the event through the VEMU website. For workshops, either bring your own instrument or request to reserve one by emailing kenadkanadas@gmail.com (quantities limited, priority will be given to participants under the age of 35. Due to limited quantities of instruments, we welcome anyone with an instrument that they are willing to loan to please contact us).

This event has been kindly sponsored by EKN/ECC the Estonian Central Council in Canada.
