Seven recipients of the ONL will be invested October 4th at Government House. Among the seven is Andrus Voitk, retired surgeon and the most active and published mycologist in NL. He has spent thousands of volunteer hours collecting, identifying, and working with experts around the world educating people about fungi, and discovered and named thousands of new species in NL. A species of fungi was named after Mr. Voitk in 2020 by other mycologists in recognition of his work. He has written two books titled “Common Mushrooms of Newfoundland and Labrador” and “Orchids of the Rock”, and co-authored numerous scientific papers and popular publications. Mr. Voitk founded Foray Newfoundland and Labrador in 2003 to bring volunteer non-scientists and world experts together in the field. Mr. Voitk received both the Tuck-Walters Award for outstanding and enduring contributions to the advancement of natural history appreciation and protection and the Gary Lincoff Award for Contributions to Amateur Mvycology in 2015.
