Sixty years ago, almost to the day, The Beatles played to roaring crowds inside Maple Leaf Gardens on their final tour. Among many other famous artists and athletes over the years. On August 22nd, 2026, this same spot, now called the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Carlton Street, hosted a spectacular display of Estonian culture. 300 singers joined 300 dancers and gymnasts to present Valguspidu, the Estonian “Celebration of Light.” Titled Läbi päeva ja öö (Through Day and Night), the showcase brought together artistic leads Heli Jürgenson, Agne Kurrikoff-Herman, and Janika Mölder to present Estonian choral, dance, and gymnastics traditions to an international audience in Toronto.
The performance opened with a deep stillness as a single spotlight illuminated mezzo-soprano Kristina Maria Agur singing “Ei saa mitte vaiki olla” (“I Cannot Stay Silent”). Folk dancers in regional costumes then filled the floor while the choir sang “Kungla rahvas,” evoking forest sanctuaries and song-filled meadows. The arena pulsed with intricate routines that brought together community members and notable figures alike, including former Estonian Prime Minister Jüri Ratas.
