Lättemäe Cleanup Day

Lättemäe, a symbol of shared Estonian heritage, had lain unmaintained for years. During this time, it bore the brunt of heavy storms and ice rain, resulting in a formidable task of cleanup and restoration.

Despite the daunting challenge, members of the Montreal Estonian Society and local residents rallied on Saturday, June 10. Together, they cleared away the broken trees – remnants of the severe weather. The fallen trees were split and stacked, effectively clearing the area and preparing resources for future use. The combined strength of the community was in full display as even heavy beams from an old bridge were lifted and relocated.

Alongside clearing debris, the community members united to repair the tare and manage the overgrown vegetation. Each task, from the heaviest to the smallest, was undertaken with great care and determination, emphasizing the importance of preserving shared spaces.

The Lättemäe Cleanup Day represented more than a tidying up effort. It was about preparing the cherished space to host a variety of activities planned for the summer and fall. The dedication to preserving shared spaces, the commitment to the environment, and the vibrant community spirit were all vividly showcased.

To cap off the day, participants gathered for a traditional Estonian sauna. This session provided an opportunity for sharing stories and laughter, a fitting end to a successful and productive day.

The success of the Lättemäe Talgud serves as a beacon of what communities can achieve when they come together. The tale of this day is one of pride and gratitude, a testament to the collective accomplishment of the community.
