PHOTOS – Pan Am Field hockey

On Monday July 20, I could not resist the opportunity to see the world's top-ranked women's field hockey team from Argentina play again. This time, Cuba was dispatched by a 10-0 score. The second game featured Chile and Mexico. From a photographer's perspective, this was an opportunity to capture new images, specifically more close-ups and images that show the energy involved in this sport. The half time watering of the field also provides some interesting views, though two of the photos show the watering occurring on the practice field immediately to the west of the field of play.

Needless to say, when the score is lopsided, it is worth moving positions to focus on the goal at which the dominant team is attacking. Yet photos of action around the goal are surprisingly challenging because the referee tends to be in the way and many goals are scored from quite a distance, unlike the many that are scored close to the goal in ice hockey.

For those interested in the photographic aspects, the bright morning light actually casts dramatic shadows on faces, so there is a fair amount of shadowing added in editing in some photos.
