ESTDOCS again ran like a well oiled machine, the films, especially the ones I saw were well chosen, providing insight and kept one sitting on the edge of ones seat.

Some short takes on the films:
Those Who Dare – by director Olafur Rognvaldsson – Goes in some detail about Iceland's involvement with Baltic re-independence in 1991. The scary feeling of small nations having declared their freedom were met with indifference from the free world who didn't wish to see the Soviet Union fragmented. Iceland which had no historical ties with the Baltics led the charge for their recognition. Lithuania picked up the baton and the rest of the Balts followed.

Arvo Pärt – Robert Wilson: The Lost Paradise – by Gunter Attein – Arvo Pärt, the world's most performed contemporary composer joins famed avant garde contemporary American director, Robert Wilson who stages Part's symphony. Part performs his music in the Vatican and Japan. Part's music which up until now has been out of my reach all of a sudden came to life.

The Story of the Baltic University – directed by Helga Merits – This story takes place south of Hamburg in the shambles of the second world war when Baltic university students who were driven from their studies and could not get into the devastated German universities of 1946 wanted to continue their learning and did so until the university folded in 1949. The university had graduated over two thousand students. The students scattered to the United States, Canada, Britain and Australia. This was a story of a fierce desire for education.

Lemmi's Love- directed by Ville Mäkelä – The film is a story that often happened during the second unpleasantness when an Estonian man, condemned by the Communist authorities had run off to Sweden leaving his wife who he thought would be safe from persecution. Unfortunately the soviets didn't spare her and sent her to Siberia for fifteen years from where she returned with five children. She never connected with her husband. This is a very sad story.
