Things you must consider when moving with children from Canada to Estonia

I've recently become aware that some Canadian-Estonians have thought about moving their family, including children, to Estonia for a few years. But at the same time, they were wondering about the major impediments or headaches that this might involve. On behalf of Eesti Elu, I'd like to address their number one concern: schooling.

It's very clear that the number one problem is getting your children into a school. This is applicable if you have a child or children between grade 1 (seven years old) and grade 12 (19 years old). The information provided here assumes that the parents will be moving to Tallinn. If a family is moving to the Estonian countryside, then your sole option will be the local school run by your local government. If your child is in secondary school (called „gümnaasium“ in Estonia), then the secondary school will be run by either the Estonian state, the Ministry of Education, or in bigger cities, by the city government. Local governments run all schools from grade 1 to grade 9.

Except for grades one and perhaps two, it is awfully difficult to send your child to a school where all subjects are taught in Estonian (except languages) if your child has grown up in Canada.

The major decision is, will your child or children attend an Estonian language school or do you want them to attend an English language school? Except for grades one and perhaps two, it is awfully difficult to send your child to a school where all subjects are taught in Estonian (except languages) if your child has grown up in Canada. Let's start with the assumption that you will want your child or children to attend an English language school.
