The one that struck a few people was when Putin was asked what he meant when he said he regretted the break-up of the Soviet Union. Putin, quite emphatically said, “One day we were a country and the next day a quarter of the Russian people were living outside of Russia's borders.” The question that begs to be asked is, “what were they doing outside of Russia in the first place ?”
To most people those Russians that “moved” outside of Russia's borders were part of a cynical resettlement program, or “Russification” to dilute the previously independent nations and have everybody as Russians. To most of the independent countries those Russians were simply illegal immigrants that had encroached on their countries. It has to be remembered that at the beginning of the second world war there were about a million and a half Estonians, (sic.) now there are nine hundred thousand. Can we have the six hundred thousand back, PLEASE Mr Putin?
