A Legacy of Care: 75 Years of the Estonian Relief Committee in Canada

Seventy-five years ago, Estonians arrived in Canada carrying little more than hope. They came as refugees – having fled war, occupation, and the loss of home, family, and certainty. For many, Canada was safe, but unfamiliar. A new language. A new climate. A new way of life. What they longed for most was reassurance that they were not alone.

Out of this uncertainty, the Estonian Relief Committee in Canada (ERC) was born.

In the early 1950s, the ERC became a lifeline for newly arrived families. Volunteers helped people find housing, access financial assistance, and navigate the overwhelming task of starting over. Just as importantly, they offered something less tangible but equally vital: understanding, solidarity, and a sense of belonging. In moments of fear and exhaustion, the community showed up for one another.

As years passed and roots were planted, the ERC evolved – yet its heart never changed. The organization grew alongside the Estonian-Canadian community, continuing to respond where care was needed most. One of its most enduring commitments has been to seniors – those who once built new lives here and now deserve to age with dignity, connection, and respect. Through advocacy, programs, housing initiatives, and partnerships, the ERC has worked to ensure that elder do not feel forgotten or isolated, and that their stories and contributions are honoured.

The ERC has also been a quiet force behind the strength of Estonian community life in Canada. By supporting cultural initiatives, fostering intergenerational connections, and working with partner organizations, it has helped keep language, traditions, and shared history alive – passing them from those who arrived with nothing, to those who were born into the freedom they helped create.

Today, the Estonian Relief Committee in Canada carries this legacy forward. The needs may look different than they did in the 1950s, but the mission remains the same: to care, to include, and to ensure that community continues.
