Chuck Konkel, Federal Conservative candidate for Scarborough-Guildwood speaks to the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC)

After a few comments by NEPMCC President Tom Saras and an introduction by Executive Vice President Maria Voutsinas, Chuck Konkel introduced himself as a fellow immigrant, born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother (school principal) and Polish father (decorated war hero). Konkel speaks several languages.

Konkel decided not to give a political speech, which is too bad because he could talk a lot about politics and his life. When his parents came to this country they had menial jobs like most people in this group.

Konkel now has a masters degree (MA) in industrial relations over an honours BA. He has written two books.

His career path has been that of a policeman, the last over thirty years, in three continents (including an Inspector in the Hong Kong Police Force), at leave from the Toronto Police Service where he is now a Chief Superintendent which is like a regimental sergeant major for the force. On his way up he has been in most of the important units like the Russian squad, organized crime, child pornography and community relations, many of which he has written procedures.

His community activities abound. As well as being a director of the Ontario Safety League Konkel is getting involved with the refugee issue, but only with Christian/Coptic refugees because they are most at risk (and he is a Roman Catholic).

Scarborough-Guildwood is no longer the constituency of Ehatare/Eesti Kodu due to reorganization “I will miss the Estonians of Old Kingston Road, they voted for me en masse,” said Konkel.
